Related Requirements: Section03 30 00 "Cast-in-Place Concrete" for installing bearing plates in concrete. Section04 20 00 "Unit Masonry" for installing bearing plates in unit masonry. Section05 12 00 "Structural Steel Framing" for field-welded shear connectors. DEFINITIONS SJI's "Specifications": Steel Joist Institute's "Standard Specifications, Load Tables and Weight Tables for Steel Joists and Joist Girders." Special Joists: Steel joists or joist girders requiring modification by manufacturer to support nonuniform, unequal, or special loading conditions that invalidate load tables in SJI's "Specifications." REFERENCE STANDARDS The latest published edition of a reference shall be applicable to this Project unless identified by a specific edition date. Reference amendments adopted prior to the effective date of this Contract shall be applicable to this Project. Materials, installation and workmanship shall comply with all applicable requirements and standards. QUALITY ASSURANCE Manufacturer Qualifications: Engage a firm experienced in manufacturing joists similar to those indicated for this Project and that have a record of successful in-service performance. Manufacturer must be certified by SJI to manufacture joists conforming to SJI standard specifications and load tables. SJI Design Standard: Comply with recommendations of SJI's "Standard Specifications Load Tables and Weight Tables for Steel Joists and Joist Griders," applicable to types of joists indicated. Welding Standards: Comply with applicable provisions of AWS D1.1 "Structural Welding Code - Steel" and AWS D13 "Structural Welding Code - Sheet Steel." Certify that each welder has satisfactorily passed AWS qualification tests for welding processes involved and, if pertinent, has undergone recertification. Professional Engineer Qualifications: A professional engineer who is legally authorized to practice in the jurisdiction where Project is located and who is experienced in providing engineering services of the kind indicated. Engineering services are defined as those performed for installations of joists that are similar to those indicated for this Project in material, design, and extent. SUBMITTALS Product Data: For each type of joist, accessory, and product. Include manufacturer's certification that joists comply with SJI "Specifications." Shop Drawings: Include layout, designation, number, type, location, and spacing of joists. Include joining and anchorage details, bracing, bridging, and joist accessories, splice and connection locations and details, and attachments to other construction. Qualification Data: For manufacturer and professional engineer. Welding certificates. Mill Certificates: For each type of bolt. Comprehensive engineering analysis of special joists signed and sealed by the qualified professional engineer responsible for its preparation. Field quality control reports. DELIVERY, STORAGE and HANDLING Deliver, store and handle steel joists as recommended in SJI "Specifications." Handle and store joists in a manner to avoid deforming members and to avoid excessive stresses. Protect joists from corrosion, deformation, and other damage during delivery, storage, and handling. SEQUENCING Deliver steel bearing plates to be built into cast-in-place concrete and masonry construction. PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS Structural Performance: Engineer, fabricate, and erect joists and connections to withstand design loads within limits and under conditions required. Design Loads: As indicated. Design Joist to withstand design loads without deflections greater than the following: Floor Joists: Vertical deflection of 1/360 of the span select deflection from one of the following Roof Joists: Vertical deflection of 1/240 of the span Roof Joists: Vertical deflection of 1/360 of the span Engineering Responsibility: Engage a joist manufacturer who utilizes a qualified professional engineer to prepare design calculations, shop drawings, and other structural data for steel joists. PRODUCTS GENERAL Materials shall meet or exceed all applicable referenced standards, federal, state and local requirements, and conform to codes and ordinances of authorities having jurisdiction. MATERIALS Steel: Comply with SJI "Specifications" for chord and web sections. Recycled Content: Provide products with an average recycled content of steel products so postconsumer recycled content plus one-half of preconsumer recycled content is not less than 25 percent. K-Series steel joists Manufacture steel joists of type indicated according to Standard Specifications for Open Web Steel Joists, K-Series: in SJIs Specifications, with steel-angle top and bottom-chord members, underslung ends, and parallel top chord. Joist Type: K-series steel joists and KCS-type K-series steel joists. Steel Joist Substitutes: Manufacture according to Standard Specifications for Open Web Steel Joists, K-Series in SJIs Specifications, with steel-angle or channel members. Comply with AWS requirements and procedures for shop welding, appearance, quality of welds, and methods used in correcting welding work. Holes in Chord Members: Provide holes in chord members where shown for securing other work to steel joists; however, deduct area of holes from the area of chord when calculating strength of member. Top Chord Extension: Provide top chord extensions ("S" type) on joists where indicated, complying with SJI "Specifications" and load tables. Extended Ends: Provide extended ends on joists where indicated, complying with SJI "Specifications" and load tables. Camber joists according to SJIs Specifications. Equip bearing ends of joists with manufacturers standard beveled ends or sloped shoes if joist slope exceeds 1/4 inch per 12 inches. Bridging: Provide horizontal or diagonal type bridging for joists complying with SJI "Specifications." Provide bridging anchors for ends of bridging lines terminating at walls or beams. End Anchorage: Provide end anchorages, including steel bearing plates, to secure joists to adjacent construction, complying with SJI "Specifications." Header Units: Provide header units to support tail joists at openings in floor or roof system not framed with steel shapes. Ceiling Extension: Provide ceiling extensions in areas having ceilings attached directly to joist bottom chord. Provide either an extended bottom chord element or a separate unit, to suit manufacturer's standards, of sufficient strength to support ceiling construction. Extend ends to within 1/2 inch of finished wall surface, unless otherwise indicated. Supply miscellaneous accessories, including splice plates and bolts required by joist manufacturer to complete joist installation. SHOP PAINTING Do not shop paint joists to receive fireproofing. Clean and remove loose scale, heavy rust, and other foreign materials from fabricated joists and accessories to be primed as follows: Surface Preparation; Power tool cleaning, SSPC-SP 3. Apply one shop coat of primer to joists and joist accessories to be primed to provide a continuous, dry paint film thickness of not less than 1 mil (0.025 mm). EXECUTION EXAMINATION Examine supporting substrates, embedded bearing plates, and abutting structural framing for compliance with requirements for installation tolerances and other conditions affecting performance. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected. INSTALLATION Installation shall meet or exceed all applicable federal, state and local requirements, referenced standards and conform to codes and ordinances of authorities having jurisdiction. Installation shall be in accordance with manufacturers published recommendations. ERECTION Place and secure steel joists in accordance with SJI "Specifications," final shop drawings, and as herein specified. Anchors: Furnish anchor bolts, steel bearing plates, and other devices to be built into concrete and masonry construction. Provide unfinished threaded fasteners for anchor bolts, unless high strength bolts indicated. Placing Joists: Do not start placement of steel joists until supporting work is in place and secured. Place joists on supporting work, adjust and align in accurate locations and spacing before permanently fastening. Provide temporary bridging, connections, and anchors to ensure lateral stability during construction. Where "open web" joist lengths are 40 feet and longer, install a center row of bolted bridging to provide lateral stability before slackening of hoisting lines. Bridging: Install bridging simultaneously with joist erection, before construction loads are applied. Anchor ends of bridging lines at top and bottom chords where terminating at walls or beams. Fastening Joists: Comply with the following: Field weld joists to supporting steel framework and steel bearing plates where indicated in accordance with SJI "Specifications" for type of joists used. Coordinate welding sequence and procedure with placing of joists. Bolt joists to supporting steel framework in accordance with SJI "Specifications" for type of joists used. Use unfinished threaded fasteners for bolted connections, unless otherwise indicated. FIELD QUALITY CONTROL Testing Agency: A qualified independent testing agency employed and paid by Owner will perform field quality-control testing. Testing agency will report test results promptly and in writing to Contractor and Owner. Testing and verification procedures will be required of high-strength bolted connections and field welds. Bolted connections will be visually inspected High-strength, field-bolted connections will be tested and verified according to procedures in RCSC's "Specification for Structural Joints Using ASTM A 325 or ASTM A 490 Bolts." Field-bolted connections will be tested and verified according to procedures in RCSC's "Load and Resistance Factor Design Specification for Structural Joints Using ASTM A 325 or ASTM A 490 Bolts." Field welds will be visually inspected In addition to visual inspection, field welds will be inspected and tested according to AWS D1.1 and the following procedures: Radiographic Testing: ASTM E 94 and ASTM E 142 Magnetic Particle Inspection: ASTM E 709 Ultrasonic Testing: ASTM E 164 Liquid Penetrant Inspection: ASTM E 165 Correct deficiencies in Work that inspections and test reports have indicated are not in compliance with specified requirements. Additional testing will be performed to determine compliance of corrected Work with specified requirements. REPAIRS AND PROTECTION Repair damaged galvanized coatings on exposed surfaces with galvanized repair paint according to ASTM A 780 and the manufacturer's instructions. Touch Up Painting: Following installation, promptly clean, prepare, and prime or re-prime field connections, rust spots and abraded surfaces of prime-painted joists, accessories, bearing plates, and abutting structural steel. Clean and prepare surface by hand tool cleaning, SSPC-SP 2, or power tool cleaning, SSPC SP 3. Apply and compatible primer of the same type as the shop primer used on adjacent surface.
