Install deck panels and accessories according to applicable specifications and commentary in SDI Publication No. 31, manufacturers written instructions, and requirements in this Section. Place deck units on supporting steel framework and adjust to final position with ends accurately aligned and bearing on supporting members before being permanently fastened. Do not stretch or contract side lap interlocks. Align deck units for entire length of run of cells and with close alignment between cells at ends of abutting units. Place deck units flat and square, secured to adjacent framing without warp or deflection. Do not place deck units on concrete supporting structure until concrete has cured and is dry. Coordinate and cooperate with structural steel erector in locating decking bundles to prevent overloading of structural members. Do not use deck units for storage or working platforms until permanently secured. ROOF DECK INSTALLATION Fasten roof deck panels to steel supporting members by arc spot (puddle) welds of the surface diameter indicated or arc seam welds with an equal perimeter, but not less than 1-1/2 inches (38 mm) long, and as follows: Retain one option in "Weld Diameter" Subparagraph below or revise to suit Project. Weld Diameter: [5/8 inch (16 mm)] [3/4 inch (19 mm)], nominal. Retain one option in "Weld Spacing" Subparagraph below. First option is based on SDI specifications for roof deck; second, on FMG Loss Prevention Data Sheet1-29 recommendations for roof deck securement. Retain third if indicating requirements on Drawings. Revise if diaphragm requirements or FM Global approval requires closer weld spacings. Weld Spacing: Weld edge and interior ribs of deck units with a minimum of two welds per deck unit at each support. Space welds [18 inches (457 mm) apart, maximum] [12 inches (305 mm) apart in the field of roof and 6 inches (150 mm) apart in roof corners and perimeter, based on roof-area definitions in FMG Loss Prevention Data Sheet1-28] [as indicated]. Weld Washers: Where deck thickness is less than 0.028 inches, install weld washers at each weld location. Side Lap and Perimeter Edge Fastening: Fasten side laps and perimeter edges of panels between supports, at intervals not exceeding 36 inches (910 mm), using one of the following methods: Mechanically fasten with self-drilling No. 10 - (4.8-mm-) diameter or larger carbon steel screws. Mechanically clinch or bottom punch Fasten with 1-1/2-inch- (38-mm-) long minimum welds. End Bearing: Install deck ends over supporting framing with a minimum end bearing of 1-1/2 inches (38 mm), with end joints as follows: Retain one of three options in "End Joints" Subparagraph below. SDI allows lapped or butted ends for roof deck. FM Global recommends that ends lap a minimum of 2 inches (51 mm). End Joints: [Lapped 2 inches (51 mm) minimum] [Butted] [Lapped 2 inches (51 mm) minimum or butted at Contractor's option]. Roof Sump Pans and Sump Plates: Install over openings provide in roof decking, and weld flanges to top of deck. Space welds not more than 12 inches (305 mm) apart with at least one weld at each corner. Miscellaneous Roof Deck Accessories: Install ridge and valley plates, finish strips, cover plates, end closures, and reinforcing channels according to deck manufacturer's recommendations. Weld to substrate to provide a complete deck installation. Flexible Closure Strips: Install flexible closure strips over partitions, walls, and where indicated. Install with adhesive according to manufacturer's instructions to ensure complete closure. Sound-Absorbing Insulation: Install premolded, roll or strip sound-absorbing insulation according to deck manufacturer's instructions. FLOOR DECK INSTALLATION Fasten floor deck panels to steel supporting members by arc spot (puddle) welds of the surface diameter indicated and as follows: Retain one option in "Weld Diameter" Subparagraph below or revise to suit Project. Weld Diameter: [5/8 inch (16 mm)] [3/4 inch (19 mm)], nominal. Retain one of two "Weld Spacing" subparagraphs below. First subparagraph is based on SDI specifications. Retain second subparagraph if indicating requirements on Drawings. Weld Spacing: Weld edge ribs of panels at each support. Space additional welds an average of 12 inch (305 mm) apart, but not more than 18 inches (457 mm) apart. Weld Spacing: Space and locate welds as indicated. Weld Washers: Where deck thickness is less than 0.028 inches, install weld washers at each weld location. Side Lap and Perimeter Edge Fastening: Fasten side laps and perimeter edges of panels between supports or at intervals not exceeding 36 inches (910 mm), using one of the following methods: Retain acceptable fastening method(s) from subparagraphs below. Welding may be mandatory for diaphragm deck. Revise fastening requirements as required. Mechanically fasten with self-drilling No. 10- (4.8-mm-) diameter or large carbon steel screws. Mechanically clinch or bottom punch Fasten with 1-1/2-inch- (38-mm-) long minimum welds. End Bearing: Install deck ends over supporting framing with a minimum end bearing of 1-1/2 inches (38 mm), with end joints as follows: Retain one of three options in "End Joints" Subparagraph below or indicate locations of each choice on Drawings. SDI requires butted end joints for composite floor deck and allows lapped or butted ends for noncomposite floor deck. End Joints: [Lapped] [Butted] [Lapped or butted at Contractor's option]. Shear Connectors: Weld shear connectors through deck to support framing according to AWS D1.1 and manufacturer's instructions. Butt end joints of dec panels; do not overlap. Pour Stops and Girder Fillers: Weld steel sheet pour stops and girder fillers to supporting structure according to SDI recommendations, unless otherwise indicated. Floor Deck Closures: Weld steel column closures, cell closures, and Z-closures to deck according to SDI recommendations to provide tight-fitting closures at open ends of ribs and sides of decking. Weld cover plates at changes in direction of floor deck panels, unless otherwise indicated. Maintain smooth cellular raceway interiors free of welds or mechanical fasteners. Install piercing hanger tabs not more than 14 inches (355 mm) apart in both directions, within 9 inches (228 mm) of wall at ends, and not more than 12 inches (305 mm) from walls at sides, unless otherwise indicated. FIELD QUALITY CONTROL Testing Agency: A qualified independent testing agency employed and paid by Owner will perform field quality-control testing. Field welds will be subject to inspection. Shear connector welds will be inspected and tested according to the requirements of AWS D1.1 for stud welding and as follows: Shear connector welds will be visually inspected. Blend tests will be performed when visual inspection reveal either less than a continuous 360 degree flash or welding repairs to any shear connector. Test will be conducted on additional shear connectors when weld fracture occurs on shear connectors already tested, according to the requirements of AWS D1.1. Testing agency will report test results promptly and in writing to Contractor and Owner. Remove and replace Work that does not comply with specified requirements. Additional testing will be performed to determine compliance of corrected work with specified requirements.
