SUMMARY This Section includes the following: Solid vinyl floor tile (luxury vinyl tile). Related sections include the following: Division09 Section Preinstallation Testing for Floor Finishes for substrate moisture and alkalinity tests to be performed on concrete substrates. Division09 Section "Resilient Base and Accessories" for resilient base, reducer strips, and other accessories installed with resilient floor coverings. SUBMITTALS Product Data: For each type of product specified. Samples for Verification: Full-size tiles of each different color and pattern of resilient floor tile specified, showing the full range of variations expected in these characteristics. Test Reports: From Testing Agency for pre-installation substrate moisture and alkalinity tests. Qualification Data: For qualified Installer. Maintenance Data: For resilient floor tile to include in the maintenance manuals specified in Division01. Record Documents: Showing locations of substrate moisture and alkalinity tests. Provide markups on floor plan indicating the location of each test and the dates tests were performed. QUALITY ASSURANCE Installer Qualifications: Engage an experienced installer to perform work of this Section who has specialized in installing resilient products similar to those required for this Project and with a record of successful in-service performance. Source Limitations: Obtain each type, color, and pattern of product specified from one source with resources to provide products of consistent quality in appearance and physical properties without delaying the Work. Fire-Test-Response Characteristics: Provide products with the following fire-test-response characteristics as determined by testing identical products per test method indicated below by a testing and inspecting agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction. Critical Radiant Flux: 0.45 W/sq.cm or greater when tested per ASTME648. Smoke Density: Maximum specific optical density of 450 or less when tested per ASTME662. Preinstallation Conference: Conduct conference at Project site to comply with requirements in Division01 Section "Project Management and Coordination." Conduct conference with attendance and participation of the following: Owner. Architect. Interior Designer. Contractor. Flooring Installer. Flooring manufacturer's representative. Testing agency representative. Review methods and procedures related to flooring installation, including manufacturer's written instructions. Review concrete substrate requirements for conditions affecting performance of flooring, including results of moisture and alkalinity tests. Review locations and frequency of moisture and alkalinity tests. Mockups: Install mockups to verify selections made under sample Submittals and to demonstrate aesthetic effects and qualities of materials and execution. Locate mockup in location indicated or, if not indicated, in location as determined by Owner or Architect. Notify Owner and Architect seven days in advance of date and time when mockup will be installed. Demonstrate installation of vinyl tile flooring and related accessories. Obtain Architect's approval of mockups before starting work. Maintain mockups during construction in an undisturbed condition as a standard for judging the completed Work. Remove unacceptable mockups when directed. Approved mockups may become part of the completed Work if undisturbed at time of Substantial Completion. DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING Deliver products to Project site in manufacturer's original, unopened cartons and containers, each bearing names of product and manufacturer, Project identification, and shipping and handling instructions. Store products in dry spaces protected from the weather, with ambient temperatures maintained between 55 and 85 degreesF. Store tiles on flat surfaces. Move products into spaces where they will be installed at least 48 hours before installation, unless longer conditioning period is recommended in writing by manufacturer. PROJECT CONDITIONS Environmental Limitations: Do not deliver or install resilient vinyl tile flooring until building is enclosed, wet work is complete, and HVAC system is operating and maintaining temperature and relative humidity at occupancy levels during the remainder of the construction period. Do not install products until they are at the same temperature as the space where they are to be installed. Close spaces to traffic during flooring installation and for time period after installation recommended in writing by manufacturer. Install tiles and accessories after other finishing operations, including painting, have been completed. Where demountable partitions and other items are indicated for installation on top of resilient tile flooring, install tile before these items are installed. Use of marking of material on back of sheet must be light enough not to show through products once installed. Do not mark back of materials with dark or red paint or markers. Do not install flooring over concrete slabs until slabs have cured and are sufficiently dry to bond with adhesive, as determined by flooring manufacturer's recommendations, and field moisture and alkalinity tests. EXTRA MATERIALS Furnish extra materials described below that match products installed, are packaged with protective covering for storage, and are identified with labels describing contents. Furnish not less than one box for each 50 boxes or fraction thereof, of each type, color, pattern, class, wearing surface, and size of resilient tile flooring installed. Deliver extra materials to Owner. WARRANTY Special Warranty: Manufacturer's standard form in which manufacturer agrees to repair or replace resilient flooring that fail(s) in materials or workmanship within specified warranty period. Limited 10 year commercial. PRODUCTS MANUFACTURERS Acceptable Manufacturers: Armstrong World Industries. Mowhawk Industries. SOLID VINYL FLOOR TILE (LUXURY VINYL FLOOR COVERING) Tile Standard: ASTMF1700. Class: ClassIII, surface-decorated vinyl tile. Type: B, embossed surface. Thickness: Manufacturers standard 0.096 inch (2.5 mm). Size: As indicated on Drawings. Profile: Beveled edge. Colors and Patterns: As indicated by manufacturer's designations. Basis of Design Product: Refer to Interior Finish Legend on Drawings. INSTALLATION ACCESSORIES Trowelable Leveling and Patching Compounds: Latex-modified, portland-cement-based formulation provided or approved by flooring manufacturer for applications indicated. Adhesives: Water-based pre-applied type recommended by manufacturer to suit resilient products and substrate conditions indicated. Use adhesives that have a VOC content of not more than 50g/L when calculated according to 40CFR59, SubpartD (EPA Method24). Approved Products: Mannington Commercial; QuickStik. Poly-acrylic adhesive pre-applied type recommended by manufacturer to suit resilient products and substrate conditions indicated. Use adhesives that have a VOC content of not more than 0g/L when calculated according to 40CFR59, SubpartD (EPA Method24). Approved Products: Base King; Envirostix. Metal Edge Strips: Extruded aluminum with mill finish of width shown, of height required to protect exposed edge of tiles, and in maximum available lengths to minimize running joints. Refer to Interior Finish Legend on Drawings. Resilient base, floor finish transition strips, and accessories: Refer to Division09 Section Resilient Base and Accessories. EXECUTION EXAMINATION Examine substrates, areas, and conditions where installation of resilient products will occur, with Installer present, for compliance with manufacturer's requirements. Verify that substrates and conditions are satisfactory for resilient product installation and comply with requirements specified. Concrete Sub-floors: Verify that concrete slabs comply with ASTMF710 and the following: Slab substrates are dry and free of curing compounds, sealers, hardeners, and other materials that may interfere with adhesive bond. Determine adhesion and dryness characteristics by performing substrate moisture and alkalinity tests as specified in Division 09 Section Preinstallation Testing for Floor Finishes. Sub-floor finishes comply with requirements specified in Division03 Section Structural Concrete for slabs receiving resilient tile flooring. Sub-floors are free of cracks, ridges, depressions, scale, and foreign deposits. Do not proceed with installation until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected. PREINSTALLATION TESTING General: Perform preinstallation testing under provisions of Section 09 05 65. Submit floor covering and adhesive manufacturers written acceptance of the concrete floor substrate as represented by moisture and alkalinity testing. Submit copies of test reports and flooring manufacturers written acceptance of substrate conditions to Owner and Architect prior to flooring installation. If test results indicate concrete subfloor is not within flooring manufacturers acceptable range, notify Owner and Architect. PREPARATION General: Comply with resilient product manufacturer's written installation instructions for preparing substrates indicated to receive resilient products. Fill cracks, holes, and depressions in substrates with trowelable leveling and patching compound and remove bumps and ridges to produce a uniform and smooth substrate. Do not install floor tiles until they are same temperature as space where they are to be installed. Move resilient products and installation materials into spaces where they will be installed at least 48 hours in advance of installation. Remove coatings, including curing compounds, and other substances that are incompatible with flooring adhesives and that contain soap, wax, oil, or silicone, using mechanical methods recommended by manufacturer. Do not use solvents. Broom and vacuum clean substrates to be covered immediately before product installation. After cleaning, examine substrates for moisture, alkaline salts, carbonation, or dust. Do not proceed with installation until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected. TILE INSTALLATION General: Comply with vinyl tile manufacturer's written installation instructions. Lay out tiles from center marks established with principal walls, discounting minor offsets, so tiles at opposite edges of room are of equal width. Adjust as necessary to avoid using cut widths that equal less than one-half of a tile at perimeter. Lay tiles square with room axis, unless otherwise indicated. Match tiles for color and pattern by selecting tiles from cartons in the same sequence as manufactured and packaged, if so numbered. Cut tiles neatly around all fixtures. Discard broken, cracked, chipped, or deformed tiles. Lay tiles in pattern of colors and sizes indicated on Drawings. Scribe, cut, and fit tiles to butt neatly and tightly to vertical surfaces and permanent fixtures, including built-in furniture, cabinets, pipes, outlets, edgings, door frames, thresholds, and nosings. Extend tiles into toe spaces, door reveals, closets, and similar openings. Maintain reference markers, holes, and openings that are in place or marked for future cutting by repeating on finish flooring as marked on sub-floor. Use chalk or other nonpermanent, non-staining marking device. Install tiles on covers for telephone and electrical ducts, and similar items in finished floor areas. Maintain overall continuity of color and pattern with pieces of flooring installed on covers. Tightly adhere edges to perimeter of floor around covers and to covers. Adhere tiles to flooring substrates using a full spread of adhesive applied to substrate to comply with tile manufacturer's written instructions, including those for trowel notching, adhesive mixing, and adhesive open and working times. Provide completed installation without open cracks, voids, raising and puckering at joints, telegraphing of adhesive spreader marks, and other surface imperfections. Handroll tiles according to tile manufacturer's written instructions. CLEANING AND PROTECTING Perform the following operations immediately after installing resilient products: Remove adhesive and other surface blemishes using cleaner recommended by resilient product manufacturers. Sweep or vacuum floor thoroughly. Do not wash floor until after time period recommended by flooring manufacturer. Damp-mop floor to remove marks and soil. Protect flooring against mars, marks, indentations, and other damage from construction operations and placement of equipment and fixtures during the remainder of construction period. Use protection methods indicated or recommended in writing by flooring manufacturer. Cover products installed on floor surfaces with undyed, untreated building paper until inspection for Substantial Completion. Do not allow foot traffic or rolled traffic for time period after installation recommended in writing by flooring manufacturer, but not less than the following: Foot traffic: Not less than 24 hours. Rolled traffic: Not less than 72 hours. Do not move heavy and sharp objects directly over floor surfaces. Place plywood or hardboard panels over flooring and under objects while they are being moved. Slide or roll objects over panels without moving panels. Clean floor surfaces not more than 4 days before dates scheduled for inspections intended to establish date of Substantial Completion in each area of Project.
