As a , I have a series of roles at MD Anderson. I¡¯m the division head of Cancer Medicine where I oversee 16 medical oncology departments. I¡¯m also a professor and chair of one of those departments, Lymphoma and Myeloma, where I care for patients with lymphoma and oversee research.
However, like many employees at MD Anderson, my connection to our mission goes beyond my professional roles. MD Anderson is also the place I bring my loved ones when they need cancer care.
The reason I was inspired to join MD Anderson as a faculty member is the same reason I recommend MD Anderson to patients: the focus on compassionate, high-quality, research-driven patient care.
Compassion and connection drive our care
A cancer diagnosis is life changing. Oftentimes, it is one of the most devastating events a patient and their family has ever faced.
I've had close family members who have had to deal with cancer. Knowing the personal side of cancer has enabled me to connect with my patients and understand how cancer has changed their lives. It motivates me to help change their lives again ¨C this time for the better ¨C by improving their treatment outcomes and quality of life.
Each person with cancer has many unique factors that may influence their care. These range from their environment to their support system. Taking these factors into account helps us select the right treatment for every patient so they can have the best outcomes possible.
Researching the next generation of cancer treatment
MD Anderson¡¯s focus on research helps us provide the outcomes and care that every patient deserves.
One major component of our research-driven care is access to clinical trials. These trials bring patients the next generation of therapies today.
At MD Anderson, we¡¯ve led clinical trials that have resulted in new drug approvals. For example, we've been involved in driving Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for some of the most important cancer treatments, including new therapies like Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) T cell therapies, bispecific antibody therapies, immunotherapies, and targeted therapies and antibody drug conjugates.
Here, our teams work together to drive the next generation of research to create new therapies for patients.
Experts work together to improve patient outcomes
One of the things that makes MD Anderson very special is that we have expertise across the whole spectrum of cancer, from the rarest diseases to the most common. We have the world's experts in each of those disease areas, and that enables us to provide high-quality care to our patients.
While team members have deep expertise in their focus areas, they also collaborate to provide multidisciplinary care. For example, in Lymphoma and Myeloma, radiologists, pathologists, radiation oncologists and other employees work together to provide state-of-the-art care, while scientific specialists work behind the scenes on research that leads to innovative therapies for patients. Each of our disease focused areas is highly specialized in the same way. This team-based approach helps each patient receive the best care and the best outcomes possible.
I have great joy and pride in being a member of the faculty at MD Anderson. I work alongside a fantastic group of individuals to advance our shared mission to improve patients¡¯ lives.
