Mission accomplished: NASA doctor receives personalized leukemia treatment

Conquest Summer 2017
Lymphocytes are white blood cells that include the immune system¡¯s T cells and natural killer (NK) cells. MD Anderson doctors are treating patients with immunotherapies that use these lymphocytes to attack blood cancers such as acute myeloid leukemia, non-Hodgkin lymphoma and others.

Immunotherapy versus blood cancer
With more than 65 clinical trials underway to test
immunotherapy¡¯s effectiveness in treating blood
cancers, MD Anderson is a leader in the field
Maybe it was Antonia Shiffman¡¯s background in nursing, or her natural inclination to get to the bottom of things that spurred her to seek a second opinion from MD Anderson.
This genetic syndrome greatly increases the chances
of developing several cancers, but those who know they have it can catch the disease early, before it¡¯s too late
Active surveillance may be a better choice for some men with prostate cancer
With a shift toward routine presurgical treatment
and steady improvements in imaging, surgery,
radiation, chemotherapy and other specialties,
doctors at MD Anderson have greatly improved
care for pancreatic cancer patients. And they¡¯re
continuing to further those advances.
