Onco-Cardiology Fellowship
The MD Anderson Onco-Cardiology Fellowship is designed to train the next generation of Cardio-Oncology leaders to support the growing need for cancer patients and survivors.
This one-year fellowship comprises six months of clinical and six months of research training at MD Anderson, which is ranked the nation's top hospital for cancer care by U.S. News & World Report. After successfully completing the program, fellows may also be given the option to pursue a second year of training.
Trainees have an opportunity to learn about cardiovascular screening, prevention and management of cancer therapy-induced cardiotoxicities, including immunotherapy, cardiac amyloidosis, cardiac tumors, and the management of cardiovascular diseases in cancer patients and survivors.
Clinical training occurs throughout MD Anderson's high-volume outpatient cardio-oncology clinics, inpatient cardio-oncology consult services, stress test/echocardiography/vascular laboratory, and on-site Cardiac Catheterization and Electrophysiology laboratory.
In addition, trainees will be expected to hold at least one primary and one secondary role in research projects in cardio-oncology. They will be provided opportunities to present their research findings at national and institutional meetings.
MD Anderson also offers regularly scheduled on-site cardio-oncology educational conferences for trainees so they can participate in case presentations, journal club, research meetings and cardiology grand rounds.
Letter from our Program Director
On behalf of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cardio-Oncology Fellowship Program, I would like to extend a warm welcome to you all.
At MD Anderson we take great pride in our commitment to provide fellows with the skills, scientific knowledge and mentoring needed to become world leaders in the field of Cardio-Oncology. Our fellowship is approved by the Texas Medical Board.
Our mission is to provide the fellows with comprehensive training in cardio-oncology and mentorship tailored to their individual career aspirations.
Our program provides exposure to a broad spectrum of cardiovascular diseases related to either cancer therapy-related toxicity or as co-existent comorbidities in patients with cancer in a high-volume setting allowing ample opportunities for learning. Further exposure to multimodality cardiac imaging, cardiac catheterization, and electrophysiological interventions specific to patients with cancer and cardiovascular disease is a strength of the program. Faculty specialize in various disease conditions including the care of patients with cancer and heart failure, cardiac amyloidosis, pulmonary hypertension, carcinoid heart disease, vascular disease and immune therapy related cardiovascular toxicities, and further diversify the training experience. In addition, collaboration with other oncology specialties provides a robust multi-disciplinary training environment.
MD Anderson Cancer Center is based in the Texas Medical Center, Houston, which is the largest medical complex in the world. A diverse patient population comprising of local, national, and international patients provides a unique demographic backdrop for our training program.
Teaching is central to our mission. Didactic lectures and grand rounds by local and national, as well as international, leaders in the field along with interactive case discussion span topics from care of cardiovascular diseases to implementation of clinical practice and quality improvement as well as research. The department provides the fellow with funding to extend training beyond our campus and attend and present at national and international conferences.
In addition to a state-of-the-art clinical training program, we also have a very productive research program, led by clinical researchers and basic scientists, which aims to provide individuals with tailored opportunities to engage in research during training.
Our fellows are the backbone and heart and soul of our program. We aim to recruit motivated fellows from diverse backgrounds. Our recent graduates have pursued academic careers and are leaders of Cardio-Oncology at their institutions.
Wellness is a basic tenet of our program and our institution. We support our fellows to reach their academic goals while balancing their personal and family life. Mental and physical well-being is of paramount importance, and our institution has multiple resources to support the health and well-being of the fellows.
We look forward to meeting you and discussing your interest in our Cardio-Oncology Fellowship program. Please feel free to reach out with questions.

MD Anderson Cancer Center is committed to encouraging good health and staying true to our mission to end cancer. If you are applying for a GME fellowship or residency program starting on or after July 1, 2016, please be advised that MD Anderson will have instituted a tobacco-free hiring process as part of its efforts to achieve these goals. If you are offered an appointment, you will be subject to a Pre-Employment Drug Screen for tobacco compounds in compliance with applicable state laws. If you do not pass the urine drug screening which includes testing for tobacco compounds, you CANNOT be appointed at MD Anderson. Should you fail to meet this contingency, MD Anderson will withdraw your offer of appointment for the academic year. You may reapply for the following academic year, but there are no guarantees that you will be offered a position as many of our programs are already filled for several years out.
