A note from Dr. Tom Buchholz
A word from the executive vice president and physician-in-chief
On behalf of our clinical community, thank you for your vital contributions to MD Anderson as part of the Advance Team. It is a true pleasure to learn from you and to experience your unwavering enthusiasm, support and commitment to our mission.
As partners in our mission to end cancer, you know this is possibly the most dynamic time in the history of oncology. Our discoveries and technologies are enabling us to push clinical boundaries. At the same time, we face new administrative pressures and uncertainty.
One certainty is that value will determine who has the competitive edge in the clinical arena. The shift to high-deductible managed care plans has led to greater scrutiny of the costs of health services and publicly reported quality outcomes. Successful care providers will be those who can report outstanding outcomes at controlled costs.
Our clinical strategy to deliver patient-centered, value-driven care is guiding our path to success. We are focused on:
- Enhancing our patient and family experience
- Documenting all aspects of medical histories to demonstrate clearly the quality of our clinical care
- Developing systems to provide real-time objective reports on our outcomes
- Reducing our cost structure
As a world leader in oncology, it is our job to embrace and guide changes in our industry. While we have made great strides in recent years, we have more work to do. For example, medicine's digital revolution offers us an exciting opportunity to extend our reach, gather patient-reported outcomes and more. This revolution also benefits patients. Thanks to better access to data, patients can be proactive health care consumers. The consumer testimonial, which has reshaped the travel and dining industries, will continue to play a much bigger role in health care decisions going forward.
Another thing I am certain of: Cancer care will always be complex and need our clinical expertise coupled with your support and guidance.
I'm grateful for all you do.
Executive Vice President and Physician-in-Chief
